Andrea against Goliath, or how a small farmer beat the biggest factory farm in South America.

Andrea Cisterna Araya is a Chilean farmer and activist, a member of the Bajo Huasco en Resistencia community, which operates between Huasco and Freirina, in the Atacama region. In 2012 Freirina became what is known is Chile as a “zone of sacrifice”, an area in which industrial interests destroy biodiversity and the lives of those who live in it, with impunity and in full view. The installation of the largest industrial pig farm in South America (2.5 million pigs, over 70,000 hectares) and consequent damage to the environment gave rise to a protest movement led by Andrea. She brought the case to the attention of the nation and achieved a historical victory.
