Melanie Kirby, like so many in her line of work, speaks of beekeeping a process of seduction, where the bees seduce their keepers.

Melanie’s love for her bees is a profound bond, one expressed in poetic language, full of feeling. It was love at first sight, too, made even stronger and more authentic by the prospect of working in a space without walls, with fresh air, flowers and freedom.

Beekeepers and their bees are together providing an ecosystem service that’s fundamental for the future of our planet. By applying the lessons taught by Mother Nature and Father Time they defend these small and precious creatures in their life mission. It’s a lesson of love that we must make our own.

Melanie Margherita Kirby was born to a family of Native American roots in the State of New Mexico. She graduated from St. John’s College (Great Books) in Santa Fe, New Mexico, with a degree in liberal arts, philosophy and sciences. She became a beekeeper by chance, while she was doing voluntary work with the Peace Corps in South America. She works as an international consultant on sustainable beekeeping and has learned from bees and beekeepers in Mexico, Paraguay, Canada, Jamaica, Ukraine, France, Morocco and across the United States.
