Droughts have always existed but the climate crisis and rise in temperatures are and will be increasingly frequent and serious. The United Nations has described the phenomenon as the “most devastating emergency of our planet, whose effects cannot be mitigated by vaccines or restrictions.”

Once again, the highest price is being paid by those who rely on agricultural labor, a sector closely linked to water, essential for the development of any crop. 

How can we protect this essential good? What infrastructure is needed to avoid wasting drinking water? What are the agricultural techniques that will enable us to address an emergency that is bound to become chronic?

  • Elisa Palazzi, researcher at the Istituto di scienze dell’atmosfera e del clima (Isac) and Physics lecturer at the University of Turin.

  • Jyotsna Puri, associate vice-president – Strategy and Knowledge Department IFAD.
  • Rodrigo Gallardo, food producer and member of the La Melga Chiloé: Identidad y Agroecología Slow Food Community.
