The 14th edition of Terra Madre Salone del Gusto will take place in Turin from September 22-26, 2022. Terra Madre, the largest gathering of the Slow Food network, aims at designing a different future for food, a future that takes shape through the daily choices of individuals, in the collective efforts of communities, and in the policies of both public and private institutions. Over 3000 delegates from 130 countries and more than 600 exhibitors will participate to the event.
Slow Food’s delegation from the Slow Food Indigenous Peoples Network consists of about 200 people: a diverse group of family farmers, producers, chefs, academics, activists from the Slow Food Youth Network (SFYN) and students.
Most of the events dedicated to the Indigenous Peoples’ Network take place at the Berta Cáceres Arena, named in honor of the activist killed for defending environmental and indigenous peoples’ rights in 2016. This Arena, inaugurated with an Opening Ceremony on Thursday, September 22 at 12 p.m., is dedicated to young, indigenous peoples and migrant networks, and to some specific production chains that were considered in terms of alliances among manufacturers.
At 4.30 p.m. on Thursday, September 22 we have a forum, Decolonize your Diet, on how colonization can take a number of different forms that go beyond the physical occupation of lands. With the participation of the Indigenous Terra Madre Advisory Board members, who have led the network in the past years: Dali Nolasco Cruz, Nahua from Mexico and member of the Slow Food Board of Directors, Tunda Lepor, Maasai from Kenya, Dai Kitabayashi, Ryukyu from Japan, Nicolas Mukumo Mushumbi, Bambuti from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Melissa Nelson and Denisa Dawn Livingston, Anashinaabe and Diné from Turtle Island.
On Friday, September 23 at 11.30 a.m. at the forum Alongside Karamajong indigenous shepherds, Umar Bashir Ochen, from the Ugandan Karamajong pastoralist people, presents how they overcome the daily challenges they have to face related to climate change.
Everyday, the first forum of the mroning is followed by a debate and on Friday, September 23 the Arena will host Youth and food: creativity, dedication, resilience, where Geovanni Erik Najera Guzmán, agroecological rapper and spokesperson of Semillero Agroecológico Slow Food Community, Carson Kiburo Kibett, co-chair of Slow Food IPs Network Council for Africa, Camila Mucchi Alonso, Aurora Food project, moderated by Diana Marcela Ampudia Sjogreen, spokesperson Slow Food Community Fi wi Old Providence & Ketlina Good Food, take visitors on a journey made of projects, resilience, collective engagement and food sovereignty.
At 10.30 a.m. on Friday, September 23 at the Terra Madre Portal some representatives of the Tanzanian Masai People will participate to the event World Farmers Market Tour / Tanzania & Uganda, while at
at 11.30 a.m. Dali Nolasco Cruz member of the Slow Food Board of Directors and of the Nahua indigenous people of Tlaola, Mexico, Naiomi Glasses, indigenous influencer, and Ismael Bello Cervantes, Nahua from Tlaxcala will participate to the event Saving our forests and their inhabitants. The Ogiek Honey Presidium community is also taking part directly from the Mau Forest they are protecting!
On Friday, September 23 at 2 p.m. at the Regeneractions Area Clayton Brascoupé, Program Director, Traditional Native American Farmers Association from Mohawk/Anishnabe Peoples will take part in the workshop Wealth, food and health: everything that’s good about seeds.
At 5.30 p.m. on Friday, September 23 Myrna Cunningham, activist for indigenous rights and President of theFund for the Development of Indigenous Peoples in Latina America and the Caribbean (FILAC) and the Pawanka Fund, will participate to the Conference Loving the Earth with Piero Bevilacqua, author of numerous books on the environment, development and capitalism; Larissa Mies Bombardi, Brazilian teacher in exile in Belgium due to threats following the publication of her Atlas of the Use of Pesticides in Brazil and Connections with the European Union, Virginie Raisson, international relations analyst specializing in prospective geopolitics and Director of the French research institute Lépac, moderated by Natasha Foote, food and food system journalist for Euractiv.
On Saturday, September 24 the program at the Berta Cáceres Arena starts at 11 a.m.. with the forum Kung and the wonderful story of Indigenous rice. Kung is a young Amis from Taiwan, who works with her family to protect the traditional agriculture and food culture of her land.
The forum is followed by the debate Saving the languages, foods and traditional knowledge of indigenous tribes, at 12 p.m., with Chiyo Tsukayama, from Slow Food Ryukyu, Japan, Dai Kitabayashi, ITM Advisory Board member from Japan, Nursultan Zhanybek uulu, farmer member of Slow Food Bishkek Zher Ene Community in Kyrgyzstan, Ysa Calderón Carlos, beekeper from the Slow Food Youth Network in Peru, moderated by Kaylena Bray from Slow Food Turtle Island.
At 3 p.m. on Saturday, September 24 at the Youth Tourism Agriculture area many representatives of the Indigenous Peoples Network take part in the workshop A phone, a minute, a Film about making impactful short videos with a mobile phone only, part of CINE – Cinema Communities for Innovation, Networks and Environment, a project coordinated by Slow Food and financed the European Union with the contribution of Fondazione CRC.
At 6.30 p.m. on Saturday, September 24 at the RegenerActions Area there will be Down Mexico Way, where protagonists will prepare tostadas and tamales together. Among the participants there will be David Alfredo Castell-Blanch Benitezm, self-taught cook from Toluca, Gladys Guadalupe Espinoza Gonzalez, traditional cook of the Slow Food community of traditional cooks in Colimota, Claudia Albertina Ruiz Santiz, Mexican Chef from San Juan Chamula and member of the Latin-American Council of Slow Food Indigenous Peoples Network, Lorena Isabel Hernandez, young producer of Milpa de Chiapas Presidium.
On Sunday, September 25 at 10 a.m. at the Berta Cáceres Arena we host the forum Food heritage and cultural practice in the Indigenous territories of Tremembé and Tabajar in Ceará, where Eliane das Virgens Sousa Ribeiro, president of Associação Comunitária Beneficente Brejo Dois Irmãos, Fernando de Matos Andrade, agriculture specialist of the Semiárido – Serviço de Assessoria às Organizações Populares Rurais program, Egnaldo Xavier, technical supervisor of the Pró-Semiarido project (SDR / CAR Bahia) and Pedro Xavier da Silva, technical coordinator of the Slow Food na defesa da Sociobiodiversidade Baiana (Associação Slow Food do Brasil) project and Slow Food Brasil network activist will present the Territory and food culture in Ceará project, developed with the indigenous communities of Tremembé in Barra do Mundaú and Tabajara of Quiterianópolis.
At 11.30 a.m. on Sunday, September 25 Lizet Bautista Patzi from the Bolivian Aymara People, will be the protagonist of the Food Talk Lizet and the Rediscovery of Ajara, an endangered plant passenger of the Slow Food Ark of Taste.
At 12 p.m. on Sunday, September 25 we have the fourm Indigenous cooks: challenges, identities, values, with Sean Sherman, Sioux Chef, Slow Food Turtle Island, Aruna Tirkey, chef and spokesperson of Ajam Emba Adivasi of Jharkhand Slow Food Community, Claudia Albertina Ruiz Santiz, chef and spokesperson Investigadores Gastronómicos de Chiapas Slow Food Community, Prof. Wu Hsueh-Yueh, Wild plants expert and IPs Chefs Alliance, moderated by Lorraine Gray, Slow Food Turtle Island.
At 5.30 p.m. on Sunday, September 25 Victoria Tauli-Corpuz, indigenous leader of the Kankana-ey Igorot people in the Philippines, former Special Rapporteur for the United Nations on the rights of Indigenous People, and member of the United Nations Development Programme Civil Society Organizations Advisory Committee, will participate to the Conference The right to food: fighting for social and environmental justice, at the Environment Park, together with Selma Dealdina, board member of Amnesty International and the Casa Socio-Environmental Fund, Don Luigi Ciotti, founder of Gruppo Abele and Libera, Willie Peyote, Italian rapper and singer who often discusses social themes, moderated by Massimo Giannini, Director of La Stampa.
On Monday, September 26 at 11 a.m. at the Berta Cáceres Arena, Dali Nolasco Cruz, member of the International Slow Food Board and of the Nahua indigenous people of Tlaola, Mexico, presents the Food Talk Women and the regeneration of the food system.
At 11.30 a.m. on Monday, September 26 Margaret Tunda Lepore, ITM Advisory Board member for Africa from Kenya, Thresa Bwalya, SFYN activist in Zambia, Sharon Chelangat, spokesperson of Mt. Elgon Benet Bee Keepers Slow Food Community, Uganda, Muna Asus, spokesperson of Nablus for the involvement of youth Slow Food Community, Palestine and Carolina Alvarado, Slow Food Chile President, participate in the Forum Women and the land: challenges, problems, resources.
At 2 p.m. on Monday, September 26 the Closing ceremony will be animated by songs and dances from all around the world, in an ideal Indigenous farewell!
Representatives of the Indigenous Peoples Network will also animate the Terra Madre Kitchen during the 5 days, there will be a special moment with indigenous chefs from Asia and Pacific Regions on Friday at lunch time!
Slow Food Indigenous Peoples Network Partners such as IFAD, Tamalpais Trust, the International Land Coalition and Pawanka Fund will take part in different activities .
