The 14th edition of Terra Madre Salone del Gusto will take place in Turin from September 22-26, 2022. Terra Madre, the largest gathering of the Slow Food network, aims at designing a different future for food, a future that takes shape through the daily choices of individuals, in the collective efforts of communities, and in the policies of both public and private institutions. Over 3000 delegates from 130 countries and more than 600 exhibitors will participate to the event.
Slow Food’s delegation from the United Kingdom consists of about 30 people: A diverse group of family farmers, producers, chefs, academics, activists from the Slow Food Youth Network (SFYN) and a special delegation from Borough Market, London, are coming to the event.
On Thursday, September 22 at 5 p.m. Corinna Hawkes, Director of the Center for Food Policy at the City University of London speaks the Conference The Regeneration We Need, at the Kyoto Hall of the Environment Park.
On Friday, September 23 at 11 a.m. at the Food Talk The Fields of the North at the Gino Strada Arena, Bosse Dahlgren, a Swedish farmer and horse breeder who has long fought for biodiversity, and Wendy Barrie, a Scottish cook and author of the Scottish Food Guide, take us on a journey through the fields and food cultures of Northern Europe, reflecting on the past and looking to the future. The goal is to promote quality food that symbolizes this Nordic spirit, and to encourage sustainable tourism that respects the planet and its resources. They have already explored these themes in their book Meadows: The Swedish farmer and the Scottish Cook, exploring Nordic food culture in more than 100 recipes.
At 12 p.m. on Friday, September 23 at the Gino Strada Arena Shane Holland, Slow Food UK Chairman, will speak at the seminar No exceptions! Why we say no to GMOs alongside the farmer, researcher and activist Elisa D’Aloisio, Vice-President of Federbio Andrea Bertoldi, food sovereignty activist Monica Vazquez, and the new President of Slow Food International, Edward Mukiibi. Slow Food continues its campaign against genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and the model they represent, based on a monoculture agricultural system and the concentration of power in the hands of a few multinational corporations. In this appointment, Slow Food explains and explores the reasons why it opposes GMOs and indeed the European deregulation of the so-called new GMOs known as Assisted Evolution Techniques.
At 3.30 p.m. on Friday, September 23 at the Kyoto Hall of Environment Park Carolyn Steel, architect and author of Sitopia, which offers a provocative vision of how we can prosper on an overcrowded and overheated planet, will participate in the conference Changing cities and models of regeneration.
At 4.30 p.m. on Friday, September 23, in the Activism Square there will be the seminar on Influencing the private sector, where representatives from Borough Market will present their work on food policy and discuss
how businesses should challenge the political structures and improve food systems.
On Sunday 25 at 4 p.m. within the Feeding the Cities space there will be an event dedicated to Discovering Borough Market, where representatives from the market present its newly published food policy and why this is about so much more than food alone. Come and hear about how the Borough Market family is bringing the local community into its fold and its ambitions to expand this further with its strategy through to 2030.
Among the chefs who will animate the Terra Madre Kitchen, there will also be Sean Simmonds, who has already a 30 years career behind him and now works for Graysons and with the Slow Food movement to give food its proper social and gastronomic role.
